Taxi plays a prominent role in the public transport with the average daily patronage over 1 million, providing efficient point-to-point transport service. At the moment there are 18,138 taxis, including 15,250 urban taxis, 2,838 New Territories taxis and 50 Lantau taxis.
Starting from May 2003, the no-stopping restriction in “7am to 7pm” and “peak hours” at restricted zones has been relaxed. Apart from that, the department continues to lift relaxation on taxi's picking up and dropping off passengers in restricted zones, which strengthens their role in providing a personalized point-to-point service.
